Standard desk height is 28 to 30 inches (71 to 76 cm) from the floor to the desk surface, and most office desks are built at 29 inches (74 cm). That range suits most people. Desk height is a key factor in good posture, so it's worth checking whether it suits you. Below is where the number comes from, how to find your correct desk height, and what to do when your desk is the wrong height. Plus a desk height table by type and a setup checklist you can tick off.

Standard Desk Height, by the Numbers

Massachusetts' ergonomic guidance for employees narrows the standard desk height to 28.5 to 30 inches (Mass.gov). The fixed desks we sell are 29 inches high, inside both ranges. Our Napa L-shape office desk and Fusion double pedestal teacher desk match that height, and so does the Napa kneespace credenza. Matching heights matter here: a credenza at desk height works as a second desk surface, with storage space underneath.

Desk type Height (inches) Height (cm) Example
Office desk, fixed 29 74 Napa L-shape desk
Teacher desk, fixed 29 74 Fusion double pedestal teacher desk
Credenza with kneespace 29 74 Napa kneespace credenza
Accessible (ADA) work surface 28 to 34 71 to 86 2010 ADA Standards, 902.3
Children's accessible work surface 26 to 30 66 to 76 2010 ADA Standards, 902.4
Reception station counter 42 107 Napa L-shape reception station
Electric sit-stand desk 27 to 47 69 to 119 NewHeights Bonita ET
Crank sit-stand desk 29.6 to 48.5 75 to 123 High-speed crank stand-up desk
Student sit-stand desk 24.5 to 42 62 to 107 Manual adjustable student desk

The reception counter is the outlier on purpose. Its top is set for visitors standing at the desk, so it isn't meant for seated work.

Why a 29-Inch Desk Doesn't Fit Everyone

Desks leave the factory at one height, and user height varies a lot. A fixed desk is sized for the average user, so it fits people near the middle and makes everyone else adapt. For a shorter person, the desk surface sits above elbow height. They lift their shoulders to type, and shoulder tension and wrist strain follow. Taller users get the opposite problem: they hunch forward, which adds neck strain.

The Mass.gov guide notes that shorter people may be more comfortable with a desk or keyboard tray at 25 to 27 inches, a few inches below the standard. That's the gap between the average desk height and the ideal desk height for a shorter user. The optimal desk height is the one that matches your own body height, not the catalog's.

How to Find Your Correct Desk Height

OSHA's computer workstation guidance says there is no single correct posture that fits everyone (OSHA eTool). It does give a method you can follow to find the right height for you:

  1. Set your chair height first. Sit with your feet flat on the floor and your thighs roughly parallel to it.
  2. Find your elbow height. Relax your shoulders, let your arms hang, and bend your elbows to about a 90-degree angle. OSHA says your elbows should sit at about the same height as the keyboard.
  3. Keep a neutral position. Your wrists remain straight, in line with your forearms, while you type.
  4. Check the monitor height. The top of the screen should sit at or just below eye level, with the monitor positioned directly in front of you.

Your desk height in one measurement. Measure from the floor to the underside of your forearm in that sitting position. That number, minus the thickness of your keyboard, is your ergonomic desk height. A desk height calculator estimates this from your height, but measuring yourself takes a minute and uses your own proportions.

If You Have Fixed Desks: Make the Desk Fit You

Most office desks have a fixed height, so you adjust the chair, keyboard, and monitor around it.

If the desk is too high (the common case for shorter users):

  • Raise your chair until your elbows reach the desk surface, and then add a footrest so your feet rest comfortably.
  • Add a keyboard tray to bring the keyboard down to elbow height. OSHA notes a tray may be needed when the workstation can't be adjusted, and it frees up space on the desktop.
  • Check that the chair's armrests let you pull close to the desk.

If the desk is too low (the common case for taller users):

  • Raise the desk on leg risers, or use the leveling glides if your desk has them. Keep all four corners level, and check that the risers are rated for the desk's weight.
  • Use a monitor arm to bring the screen up so you can sit upright and look straight ahead.

If you want to stand part of the day, a desktop converter turns a fixed desk into a sitting and standing setup. The Soar electric desktop sit/stand unit lifts the work surface 17.5 inches (44 cm) and holds two monitors.

These accessories complete an ergonomic setup for far less than a new desk, and they let one 29-inch desk serve users of different heights.

Standing Desk Height

Standing follows the elbow rule too: the desk surface should meet your elbows in a relaxed posture, shoulders down. Reset the desk each time you switch. On a height-adjustable desk, what matters most is the height range. The lowest setting needs to work as a sitting desk at your seated elbow height, and the highest needs to reach your standing elbow height.

  • The NewHeights Bonita ET runs from 27 to 47 inches (69 to 119 cm), according to its maker, RightAngle Products.
  • Taller users who need more height can look at a crank model that reaches 48.5 inches (123 cm).
  • For classrooms, student sit-stand desks start lower, at 24.5 inches (62 cm), and KI Ruckus desks adjust with a cordless pneumatic lift.

Moving between sitting and standing positions, rather than holding one for extended periods, is the point of an adjustable desk. Our full range of height-adjustable desks is in sit-stand desks.

Desk Height for Accessible Workstations and Schools

The 2010 ADA Standards set accessible work surfaces at 28 to 34 inches (71 to 86 cm) above the floor, and surfaces for children's use at 26 to 30 inches (66 to 76 cm) (U.S. Access Board). A 29-inch desk already falls inside the adult range. Knee clearance underneath matters too, so check the space between pedestals before you specify it. Our wheelchair and ADA desks are built for this.

Students grow from year to year and vary in height within a single class, so one fixed desk size rarely fits everyone. An adjustable student desk handles this without a separate fixed desk for each grade. Our adjustable sit-stand student desk sets anywhere from 24.5 to 42 inches with a hex wrench, using marked inch lines on all four legs, and suits elementary through high school. Use the elbow method above, and recheck the setting during the year as students grow.

Buying Desks for a Team

For an office with staff of different heights, start with the extremes. Measure the seated elbow height of your shortest and tallest users. If a chair adjustment, footrest, or keyboard tray can bring both to a 29-inch surface, standard-height desks will work for the whole team. Pair them with ergonomic furniture and accessories such as adjustable chairs and keyboard trays, and add height-adjustable desks for anyone outside that range. That keeps desk size and finish consistent across the office while each desk fits its user.

Run the check below when you set up a new desk, and again when someone new sits down at it.

What is standard desk height in cm? 71 to 76 cm. A 29-inch desk is 74 cm, and a 30-inch desk is 76 cm.

How tall should a standing desk be? At your standing elbow height, with your shoulders relaxed. Check that the desk's height range covers both your sitting and standing heights.

What is the ADA desk height? Accessible work surfaces must be 28 to 34 inches (71 to 86 cm) above the floor.

What chair height goes with a 29-inch desk? Set the chair so your elbows meet the desk surface. If your feet then don't rest comfortably on the floor, add a footrest.
